- Description
- This paper considers an alternative method of preserving cultural heritage of these industrial sites, which is a retrospective and holistic approach and will encapsulate the evolution and development of industrial sites through history. It adapts existing virtual technologies such as augmented reality and mobile technologies making it possible to reconstruct the lost and invisible city, and which is accessible through a mobile application. The mobile application will detect the location of the user, and enable the user to view relevant digital models about the industrial past, through a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet device. This alternative method of preserving the cultural heritage of these industrial sites is currently being developed by the authors. The industrial city Newcastle, Australia will be used as a case study and it will reconstruct three eras of industrial growth: the 1880s, 1930s and 1950s. The paper will outline this alternative method, how it will be implemented and the future of this method's application.
